MUSCULOSKELETAL INFECTIONS

Infections that occur after placement of a prosthesis or osteosynthesis material such as plates, screws or nails, are known as periprosthetic or peri-implant infections. Periprosthetic infections are a potential, but rare, side effect with an incidence of 1-2 cases per 100 procedures. For this reason, they are considered a severe complication and they deserve comprehensive approach and individualized treatment.

DR. VILCHEZ IS AN EXPERT IN DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF PERIPROSTHETIC INFECTION.

A prosthesis infection does not always appear immediately after surgery. They are classified according to the time of onset after surgery.

  • Early: During the first month of replacement surgery.
  • Chronic: after the first month replacement surgery.
  • Hematogenous: a functional prosthesis infection occurred after an infection in another part of the body such as pneumonia, bacteremia, etc.

Prosthetic infections occur for several reasons. In most of these infections bacteria have entered the bloodstream, by falling off from somewhere else, or by being in the skin and soft tissues. These bacteria can overwhelm the patient's immune system and ultimately cause a serious infection in or around the prosthesis.

Symptoms of a possible prosthetic infection include:

  • Joint pain
  • Swelling
  • Skin redness
  • Fever
  • Discharge
  • Abnormal laboratory values
